STAY PUT’s debut 7” Orange is some fine music. Easy on the ears and not-at-all bad like some music can be, and I’ve been around – I’ve heard some real shit. STAY PUT are shining like a beacon of taste and musical superiority in a sea of wannabe wetwipes. Orange gives ya four songs of masterful power pop/college rock heavily leaning towards hook filled late- career SUPERCHUNK, lead-driven slices of DINOSAUR JR, and silky alt-pop of LEMONHEADS. Pulling this genre off without being too obvious or sickly sweet is something only emo masters can achieve – and guess what? STAY PUT might be the new champs. They’ve created the perfect balance of melody and malaise, and it’s what make this release really stand out. Listening to Orange you can tell that buried in the chunky, melodic indie rock is a hard worn sense world-weary cynicism – a vocal delivery that isn’t filled with optimism at the society we live in. Lowkey vocals backed by huge tunes and it’s cool as fuck. Songs like Cut it out sound like JOYCE MANOR at their most mid-paced and crucial, and as one of SUPERCHUNK’s biggest fans, hearing songs like Tummy Ache is a total joy – fat riffs, guitar solos, a killer vocal hook, fuzzy bass, and even some do-do-do-do-dooos. One of the most impressive feats that Stay Put achieves is that they’ve created this fucking amazing indie rock AND they’re also in some of the best powerviolence/hardcore bands in the UK. I don’t understand how they’ve done it, but I like it, and goddamn do I respect it.
